How to Create the Perfect Wedding Day Timeline for Photos
One of the most common questions I get from couples is, "How much time do we actually need for photos?" It's a fantastic question, because a well-thought-out wedding photography timeline is the secret to a stress-free day and beautiful, lasting memories.
As your photographer, my goal is to help you create a realistic schedule that balances capturing every moment with giving you time to breathe and enjoy your day.
Your perfect wedding day timeline for photos is more than just a schedule—it’s a guide that ensures you can relax and truly be present. Let's walk through the key moments to plan for.
Getting Ready (Bride): 2 Hours
This is the start of the story, and it's a phase many couples underestimate. I typically recommend giving your photographer at least two hours to capture all the details without a rush.
Details First: We’ll start with photos of your dress, shoes, jewelry, and any other special items.
Hair and Makeup: We’ll capture the finishing touches of your hair and makeup. You should aim to be fully ready about 30 minutes before we need to leave for the first look or ceremony.
Candid Moments: I'll photograph the relaxed and happy moments with your wedding party, as well as the emotional "first looks" with parents or a partner.
Getting Dressed: Of course, the grand finale to the morning will be getting into your wedding dress! Be sure to leave a bit of time after getting dressed, and let your photographer know if you'd like to have a first look with your parents or bridesmaids.
The First Look: 30 Minutes
A First Look is an intimate moment that can make your day feel less rushed. It's a beautiful alternative to seeing each other for the first time at the ceremony.
Location: We’ll find a quiet, private spot where you can see each other without distractions.
Time Savings: Having a First Look allows us to get most of the couple's portraits and even some of the wedding party photos done before the ceremony, freeing up more time for you to celebrate later.
Ceremony: 30-45 Minutes
This is the main event! While the ceremony itself is typically a short segment, it's packed with key moments.
Ceremony Details and Guest Seating: I'll arrive a bit early to capture guests arriving and the beautiful ceremony setup and decor.
The Big Moments: I’ll be focused on capturing the walk down the aisle, the exchange of vows and rings, and your first kiss as a married couple.
Post-Ceremony: After you exit, we'll quickly capture a few candid photos with your guests before moving to group shots.
Formal Portraits (Family & Wedding Party): 45-60 Minutes
This is where organization is your best friend. To make sure this runs smoothly, it's essential to have a list of all the groupings you want.
Start with Family: I recommend doing family photos first. This allows family members to get to the reception faster. Have a list with the names of each person in every photo to make it easier for your photographer to find who is needed.
Wedding Party: Once the family portraits are done, we can focus on the full wedding party photos. You can get more creative and fun with these shots!
Couple’s Portraits: 30 Minutes
This is your time to shine! It’s the perfect opportunity to get those stunning, artistic shots of you and your partner.
Enjoy the Moment: This is your chance to step away from the crowd, reflect on the day, and simply be together. These photos often become your favourites.
The Reception: 2-3 Hours
The party has started! While you’re celebrating, I’ll be working in the background to capture all the moments.
Candid Shots: I’ll capture the speeches, toasts, and reactions of your guests.
Key Events: This includes all the traditional moments like your first dance, father-daughter dance, mother-son dance, and the cake cutting.
Open Dancing: Once the dance floor opens up, I’ll capture all the fun and energy!
Golden Hour is Key: I always recommend scheduling about 15 minutes for golden hour photos during your reception. These photos were taken about an hour before sunset. This "Golden Hour" lighting is soft, warm, and absolutely beautiful.
