How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photography Session from a Waterdown Newborn Photographer

As a Waterdown Newborn Photographer, I understand that welcoming a new baby can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. That’s why I strive to make the newborn photography experience as relaxed and enjoyable as possible. No need to worry about packing up and heading out; I bring the studio to you! With natural lighting and your personal touches, we can create beautiful images that reflect your family’s personality and bond. Here are a few tips for how to prepare for your newborn photography session to ensure it goes as smoothly as possible.

1: Feed the baby 30 minutes before your newborn photography session. This will ensure the baby is full, happy and sleepy, but also gives you time to get everyone dressed and ready. Keep a spit-up cloth or blanket on hand throughout the session to help keep your outfits clean.

2. Have an extra outfit or two picked out for the baby in case of any accidents. This way, you are not scrambling to find something new to change them into mid-session. As an experienced Waterdown Newborn Photographer, I also always recommend that the parents have an extra outfit in mind, as accidents can very easily end up on you as well.

Bonus Tip: Have a white/neutral onesie or clean diaper available for photos of baby’s tiny details, such as their leg wrinkles and belly button.

3. As a mom of two myself, I know household chores can get away from you in those early weeks with a newborn. For your newborn photography session, I do not want you to spend your valuable time cleaning your home to perfection, but I do recommend tidying the rooms we will be shooting in. This would include the primary bedroom and nursery, and sometimes the living room, depending on how the natural light is in your home. Put away any clutter, such as cups, wipes, lotions, etc, that may be out on side tables and dressers, as these will be distracting in the photos and take attention away from your family.

4. Open up all of the blinds and curtains in the rooms we will be shooting in to let the natural light flood into your home.

5. Prepare any older siblings for the session by letting them pick out some clean snacks and activities to do while waiting for their turn during our shoot. I do try to work with any siblings first to ensure they are not waiting around, as I know their attention span is not long, but occasionally they may need to wait between shots. 6. Don’t stress or set expectations, yes, I know this is easier said than done. Babies are unpredictable, and that’s okay. We are in no rush and can take time when needed to feed, change or settle the baby. As a Waterdown Newborn Photographer, I want this to be a wonderful experience for you and your family, so know I am flexible and happy to accommodate your baby’s needs. The most important thing is that you are capturing this once-in-a-lifetime moment, and nothing else matters.
