Big Siblings and Furry Friends: Tips from a Newborn Photographer in Burlington, Ontario
Adding a new member to the family is a massive transition—not just for you, but for your first "babies" too, whether they have two legs or four!
As a newborn photographer in Burlington, Ontario, the number one concern I hear from parents during our consultation is: “I’m worried my toddler won’t sit still,” or “What if the dog is too excited?”
I’m here to tell you: It’s okay! In fact, those chaotic, honest, and unscripted moments often become the most cherished photos in your gallery. Here is how we make including siblings and pets stress-free during your in-home lifestyle session.
Tips for Big Siblings: Let Them Be the Helper
Toddlers are navigating a lot of big emotions when a new baby arrives. The best way to get them involved in your session is to make them feel important.
No "Cheese" Allowed: I don’t force smiles, but instead I do my best to let them happen naturally. As a newborn photographer in Burlington, Ontario, I use play-based prompting to bring out your child’s personality and create sweet, joyfilled moments. I might ask them to "count the baby's toes" or "whisper a secret in the baby's ear."
The "First 20 Minutes" Rule: I usually try to capture sibling photos right at the start of the session. Their attention span is shortest, and their excitement is highest. Once we have those sweet shots, they can go play while we focus on the solo newborn portraits.
Praise Over Pressure: We keep the mood light. If they need a snack break or a dance party in the middle of the shoot, we take one!
Including the Family Pet: Safety and Serenity
For many of my clients in the Oakville and Burlington area, their dog was their first "baby." It’s only natural to want them included in your newborn's first professional portraits.
Exercise First: If you have a high-energy dog, try to give them a long walk or play session before I arrive. A tired dog is a relaxed dog!
Safety First: I never force a pet to pose in a way that feels unnatural or unsafe. Usually, the best shots are the "guard dog" moments—where your pup is simply laying at the foot of the bed or sniffing a tiny foot while you hold the baby.
Bring the Treats: Have their favorite high-value treats handy. A little positive reinforcement goes a long way in getting them to look toward the camera for that split second.
Why In-Home Sessions are Better for Everyone
The beauty of choosing an in-home lifestyle session is that your siblings and pets are in their safe space. There is no "performance anxiety" that comes with a sterile studio environment.
If your toddler gets bored, they can go play with their own toys. If the dog gets over-stimulated, they can go to their crate or another room. This relaxed atmosphere allows me, as your newborn photographer in Burlington, Ontario, to capture the true essence of your growing family.
